The Langtang Valley, walked slowly
A week close to Kathmandu but a world away from it: forest, yak pastures and the rebuilt villages of the valley, ending at Kyanjin Gompa and a climb to a 4,700-metre viewpoint.

Langtang lies only a day’s drive north of Kathmandu, yet the valley feels remote. We drove to Syabrubesi, shouldered our packs and spent seven days walking up a river and down again.
The first day climbs through bamboo and oak forest. Red pandas and langurs live here, though we only saw the langurs, swinging above the trail. By the second day the forest thinned and the valley opened into meadow, with peaks closing in on both sides.
A valley that rebuilt itself
The 2015 earthquake changed this valley. Langtang village was rebuilt on higher ground, and today its stone and timber houses, memorial stupas and yak herds make it one of the most moving places on the trail. We stopped long enough for tea and a quiet walk.
Kyanjin Gompa sits at 3,870 metres, with a monastery, a small cheese factory and snow peaks in every direction. We climbed Kyanjin Ri the next morning, slowly, and looked across the valley to a wall of ice and rock.
Days at altitude
We kept the days short on purpose. A few hours of walking, a long lunch, a book on the lodge porch. At Kyanjin we ate yak cheese on toast and watched cloud move across the glacier. In the evenings the lodge owner’s daughter taught us a card game with rules no one could explain twice.
The climb to Kyanjin Ri was the highest we went, a steep, steady slog with a wide view as a reward. We turned back before the top when the wind picked up, which felt like the right decision and left no regrets.

Sofia Marin’s tips
- Spend two nights at Kyanjin Gompa so there is a buffer for weather.
- Try the local cheese and yak curd; it is proudly made here.
- Respect the memorials in Langtang village and ask before photographing people.
What I would do differently
We hurried to Kyanjin in two days and felt it. A third day to Langtang village would have made the whole trip calmer.
